How to Address Iron in Water

If you’re wrestling with iron in your water, it can be a real nuisance.  Iron leaves stains on fixtures, washing machines, dishwashers, and hot water heaters, sinks, tubs and more.  It often stains these things with stains ranging from light orange to light brown to red.

Iron in water can affect the quality of the taste of water by giving off a metallic taste.  It can also give off a foul odor.   Iron can reduce  the life of appliances, water softeners, and clog up water pipes.  Your white laundry will not be white after several washes.  And if you’re watering your lawn with water containing iron, it can cause stains on your sidewalks, walls, and fixtures.

There are two distinctive kinds of iron – Ferrous and Ferric.  Ferrous iron is often referred to as clear water iron and Ferric is red water iron.  Ferrous iron cannot be seen by the naked eye, however it leaves its evidence in the form of red and brown stains.  With Ferric iron, the water actually appears red and leave stains behind.  These secondary contaminants are not dangerous to drink.

While there are no hazardous effects on humans to either type of iron, this secondary impurity can be quite troubling to deal with because of the impacts it has to the household.

So, what is the preferred way to correct iron issues?  Iron can be easily removed using an oxidizing media-based system. There are several kinds of iron removal medias on the market today including Catalox, Pyrolox, and Manganese Green Sand among others.  These systems require  backwashing to rinse the media in the tank, so that it will operate effectively for up to four years.  The valves available today for these systems are simple to program and maintain.  You should choose a system that is backed up by a iron-clad  warranty to ensure manufacturer integrity.   Last, do NOT use a water softener to solve an iron problem.  So be sure to select the right tool to correct iron problems.

Nowadays there are all-in-one systems available that will also address sulfur, manganese and iron all in one cost effective and easy to install system.  These systems are low maintenance and will provide years of problem-free water.

Dealing with your iron issues will make cleaning easier, your clothes brighter and your appliances last longer.
